How to write a song in 10 minutes or less .Whatsay #3

First of all , let me clarify a few things about this article

  1. This article is for beginners
  2. The songs that you will write after reading this article aren’t going to win you a grammy. They are going to be average songs which are generally enough to impress a school or college crowd but not professional musicians .
  3. Some of the material in this article is based on my taste.
  4. This is mainly the rhythm part of the song you will learn. I play a guitar, but if you have a keyboard/piano I think it should work fine too.

For me , song writing is a really satisfying way to cope with sadness. I use it as an outlet for emotions and frankly speaking it  helps a lot. And I mean a lot. But we will deal with my feelings when we meet for coffee of something *Wink* , right now , let’s just get down to it.

There are basically four things we need to focus on to create a mediocre song

  1. Chord progression.
  2. Strumming pattern.
  3. Lyrics .
  4. Structure of the song.

So , first , let’s go down on chord progression.

CHORD PROGRESSION.

Perhaps the best analogy used to describe chords is that they are like the background colors of the painting. You choose the color as per the general mood of the painting, just like you use ‘red’ to describe hot or ‘blue’ for cold. So, perhaps the most basic thing about these colors is that majors are happy and minors are sad.

So , to be a little more detailed on this matter, the key of C is generally  happy , D is classical , G is tragic ,F- is passionate , E- Disapproving .

Let’s take a look at the Major chord family in D.( The major scale formula is R-W-W-H-W-W-W-H , i.e Root note , whole step from that , whole step from that , half step from that , whole step , whole step , half step.)

So , we begin with the D major scale , which is

D , E , F# ,G , A , B , C# , D So , The chord family is

I)D- Major – Root

II)E- Minor

III)F#-Minor

IV)G- Major- Sub dominant

V)A- Major – Dominant

VI)B-Diminished

VII)C#-Minor

Here , you can consider the Majors like the core of the family. D is the root , G major is called the ‘Sub-dominant’ , and A is the dominant.(I.IV.V)

And , well there are a ton of songs out there which consist of only root , sub-dominant and dominant. And , you might as well start with this pattern and go one chord for each 4 measures .i.e I,IV,V,I of any family you choose.

If you are writing a sad or thoughtful ballad , you might want to use I,IV,V,V for the verses.

An energetic song would use I , III, ,IV, VI

Other common progressions are  I,II,IV,V    ,   I , IV , I ,V  etc

For the purposes of this article , we shall use The pattern I,II,IV,V in D major.

i.e D , Em, G, A

Now , you may want your chorus to sound different than the verse, I know I do . So ,we will use this handy thing called the circle of fifths

What we can do now is use the note directly below our root , or the adjacent ones. You might have noticed that the outer circle is the major circle and the inner circle is the minor circle. Since I already have set a major ‘mood’ , I will continue that trend and use A(I actually would have preferred to go for Bm , but this will be easier to play if you are playing along)

And what’s I,II,IV,V for A?

Well it’s A,Bm,D,E

So , Verse-  D , Em, G, A

Chorus- A,Bm,D,E.

So far so good.

Strumming pattern.

I want you to take a notebook and write down the numbers 1 to 8 as rows. The numbers from 1 to 8 are measures(You have 4 chords , so this pattern will repeat itself twice i.e 4 measures per chord…or you can use what you think sounds best, this is just a suggestion). Consider that one ‘strum’.

Now , the odd numbers can hold the down strums , and the even numbers can hold the up strums. We will represent downward strums as D , upward strums as U , and Pauses as P.

Now umm… make a pattern , any pattern that you think will fit best. For this article let’s use the following ones

Verse- D P D U D U D U,

and

Chorus – D U P U D U D U

Lyrics.

To be quite fair, I cannot help you much on this part. All I can tell you is that the lyrics should be consistent with the mood of the song, And that you can use the common meter if you want to make the song easier to sing

The common meter is very accurately and beautifully explained by Vsauce in this poem

“The first line has 8 syllables

the next contains just 6

For emphasis , Iambic stress

That’s it no other tricks”

Some songs in the common meter are Amazing grace , Pokemon theme song , Gilligans Island , House of the rising sun , etc.

Structure.

Constructing a song is very similar to constructing a building.. except you know..you can actually construct a song without studying in college.

The basic key parts of a song are

  • Intro
  • Verse
  • Pre-chorus
  • Chorus
  • Bridge
  • Solo
  • Outro

Writing the Intro , solo and outro is the job of the lead guitarist and since we are mainly focusing on rhythm here , we will leave that out. Although know that it is perfectly okay if your song does not have a solo or an intro. We are not aiming for the Grammy’s here. We just want to create something to impress chicks or guys or just want to channel out our emotions .

We will upload a video soon , which will be even more helpful to get you going and will feature a song dedicated to all our fans, so stay tuned. 😉

Confessions of an Economic Hit Man is a book written by John Perkins and published in 2004. It provides Perkins’ account of his career with consulting firm Chas. T. Main in Boston. Before employment with the firm, he interviewed for a job with the National Security Agency (NSA). 4. The tales of Dunk and Egg

This set of novels by George R.R. Martin is set in the A song of ice and fire universe but about 90 years preceding the start of ‘A game of thrones’.Dunk is Ser Duncan The Tall, and Egg is Aegon V.So far , there are 3 books in this series namely  ‘The Hedge Knight , ‘The sworn sword’ , and  ‘The mystery knight’  (Yes , I did just use an Oxford comma).

The books on which the hit new Netflix series with the same name is based is a definite must read for all the fans of the show.

7.The demon haunted world

The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark is a book by astrophysicist Carl Sagan, which was first published in 1995.

The book is intended to explain the scientific method to laypeople, and to encourage people to learn critical or skeptical thinking. It explains methods to help distinguish between ideas that are considered valid science, and ideas that can be considered pseudoscience. Sagan states that when new ideas are offered for consideration, they should be tested by means of skeptical thinking, and should stand up to rigorous questioning.

8.The cosmic connection

The Cosmic Connection: An Extraterrestrial Perspective is a book by Carl Sagan, produced by Jerome Agel. It was originally published in 1973.

The book covers several topics, and focusses mainly on the possibility of extraterrestrial intelligence, the likelihood of the existence of more advanced civilizations, and their distribution in the local galaxy, and in the universe.

Sagan describes the hypothetical opinions of more advanced intelligences and their views of the Earth, as well as communication with mankind. He also discusses the popularity of UFO sightings and attempts mathematically to portray the probability of such events. Sagan also discusses his view of astrology as a pseudoscience.

9.Who moved my cheese?

The text describes change in one’s work and life, and four typical reactions to said change by two mice and two “littlepeople”, during their hunt for cheese. A New York Times business bestseller upon release, Who Moved My Cheese? remained on the list for almost five years and spent over 200 weeks on Publishers Weekly‘s hardcover nonfiction list. It has sold more than 26 million copies worldwide in 37 languages and remains to be one of the best-selling business books

In my personal opinion , this book by Dale Carnegie is what humanity needs right now. If you are in high school or college , you are moments away from diving into the real world , and this book will be a part of your parachute.

7 relaxing songs to make you forget about the world – Whatsay? #1

So, you have a big day tomorrow. Something big on the line, awaiting you and there are you are, bludgeoned with anxiety and stress, shivering in a lonely corner, revising your methods, your notes, looking at your own resume, thinking about the consequences of your actions,or what consequences your actions might bring about.Or maybe you are just unhappy with the way things are,or always have been….What do you do about that gaping hole of madness you are running towards? You scream.

Yes , I know you that well.

I felt the same yesterday.I feel the same today. And I will probably feel that way tomorrow.

Such is the life of a student. And anyone else whom circumstances lead to feel like this.
But, my friends, there is a fix to this. There is a way you can escape the pit for a while.. And no it’s not drugs or drinks.

It’s something much more effective and much more dangerous. The abstract friends in the form of rhythm and melody,of course.

Music is more than well known for its effect on the brain. In fact, it even alters your train of though entirely at times ,

And scientists (Or some people in lab coats) say that with the music kinda possesses you (NO , WE ARE NOT TALKING ABOUT THE ILLUMINATI) Meaning,we use the power of music to tap into brain circuits controlling emotion and movement, to actually control the brain circuitry of sensory perception. This helps people dance in clubs,or unite tribes, and this is the reason why we use music in various functions,or why a prayer is a particular sound, and this is the reason why soldiers march the way the do.

Now , before we look over your evil plan about taking over the world with a guitar on your back , we will first deal with your anxiety issue.

So , before we install this software into your head , read the readme.txt first

TO NOTE:

1)These are my choices.

2) This list switches between genres.

3) It might not have the same effect on all of you.

4) Could induce deep thinking on greater topics.

5) Could be addictive to a certain extent.

#1: The Lion Sleeps Tonight – The Tokens

This is one of the most calm, sweet and relaxing song ever. You may have heard this one in Lion King.

The Lion Sleeps Tonight“, also known as “Wimba Way” or “Wimoweh” , is a song written and recorded by Solomon Linda originally with the Evening Birds .The Tokens later covered it. They got nearly $15million in royalties

#2: Canon In D – Pachelbel.

THIS.IS.THE.DEAL. Just close your eyes and let it’s beauty fill your soul.€

Johann Pachelbel was a German Baroque composer, organist and teacher. He composed a large body of sacred and secular music and has earned a place among the most important composers of the Baroque era.

#3: Django Reinhardt – Minor Swing

Some of Djagno Reinhardt’s songs were featured in the OST of the game ‘Mafia’

Reinhardt is often regarded as one of the greatest guitar players of all time and was the first major European jazz musician who made major contributions to the development of the genre. After his third and fourth fingers were paralysed when he suffered burns in a fire, Reinhardt used only the index and middle fingers of his left hand on his solos and invented an entirely new style of jazz guitar technique (sometimes called ‘hot’ jazz guitar) that has since become a living music tradition within French Gypsy culture.

#4: Comfortably Numb – Pink Floyd.

The song is one of Pink Floyd’s most famous, and is renowned especially for its guitar solos In 2004, the song was ranked number 314 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of 500 greatest songs of all time (great album btw) In 2005, it became the last song ever to be performed by Waters, Gilmour, Wright, and Mason together. In 2011, the song was ranked 5th in the BBC Radio’s listeners’ Desert Island Discs choices.

#5: Appalachian Spring – Aaron Copland

Appalachian Spring is a composition by Aaron Copland that premièred in 1944 and has achieved widespread and enduring popularity as an orchestral suite. He won the Pulitzer prize for music in 1945 for this song.

#6: I see fire – Ed sheeran

This song is relatively newer than the others on the list , it was featured at the end credits in the movie Hobbit 2 -Desolation Of Smaug.

#7: Vivaldi – Concerto for 2 mandolins in G

And this is the end of the list for now.

Realize that these are not the only 7 songs which are relaxing , there are many many others.

Have some more? Leave them in the comments below.
